DATATAG WARN BOAT OWNERS OF INCREASED OUTBOARD THEFT IN FIRST HALF OF YEAR
As the summer tries to get into full swing security marking experts Datatag, are warning owners of marine equipment - especially outboard motors - to be extra vigilant.
Outboard theft is by far the biggest issue in the marine market and accounts for nearly 60% of all marine crime. And the issue is on the increase say Datatag as figures show outboard theft in the first half of 2015 has increased by over 40% as a proportion of all marine crime indicating a targeting by criminals of easy to move on items.
Outboards under 20HP account for 70% of outboard theft* which, given their extreme portability and popularity, is easy to understand. Weighing in at an average of just under 60kg**, a sub 20HP engine is an easy target for criminals and can quickly be removed from transoms and placed in the back of a van or pick up. With a typical new retail price of just under £3200*** they offer significant and quick returns for criminal’s efforts!
The effect of such crime is not limited however to the cost of replacing the stolen outboard. Often in an attempt to remove the engine as quickly as possible gangs use chainsaws to cut through transoms leaving boats with often irreparable damage.
Dave Luscombe, Strategic Alliance Manager at Datatag commented ‘Marine theft is a significant concern for the industry and the reason why we developed our Marine Security System. Our technologies provide irremovable unique identity so that even when VIN plates are altered or replaced the original owners details are still identifiable to Police in the event of a theft.’
The Datatag Marine Security System features many innovative and advanced Datatag Technologies including tamper evident warning labels to deter thieves, UV etching, Datadots and RFID transponders. The combination of these elements has a proven record in reducing crime in other industries such as Construction and Motorcycle. Aiding in the Police’s work to defeat criminals is Datatag’s secure database which unlike many is accessible 24/7 allowing fast, secure and easy confirmation of ownership.
Suzuki are the first manufacturer to offer their customers Datatag and George Cheeseman, Sales and Marketing Manager, ATV and Marine commented ‘We want all our customers to get the most out of their Suzuki Marine equipment and in fitting Datatag we feel we can allow them to relax just that little bit more.’
Owners of all marine outboards can protect themselves with a Datatag Marine Outboard Kit for the one off price of just £39.99 – there are no additional annual fees. Kits are available through the Datatag website or selected marine dealers.

Like all of the best inventions and ideas, the concept of Datatag is simple but utilizes state of the art identification technologies to permanently mark and protect your property. Datatag makes your vehicles and property identifiable to the Police in such a way that is virtually impossible for a thief to defeat therefore, the risk involved in stealing this marked property becomes high to the criminals who tend to avoid stealing the property in the first place.
Criminals prefer to steal property where they can easily remove or change the original manufacturer's identification numbers or marks. Tampering with these important identification numbers makes the stolen property less likely to be identified and hinders the police in tracing the real owner.
Datatag changes this, our systems can include literally thousands of unique identification marks or tags which can be permanently hidden within your property. A thief now has the impossible task of removing every single identification mark without damaging the stolen property to avoid the risk of detection whereas a Police Officer now only needs to locate and identify one or two of the marks to assist with a prosecution.
Datatag has made a major impact on reducing theft and the Crown Prosecution Service has a 100% successful prosecution rate when evidence has been supplied by Datatag. Our award winning systems are used to deter theft but increasingly they are being used as a valuable asset tracking system.
