A brand new collection of over 100 previously unpublished photos of Marilyn Monroe are now available in a new book called Marilyn: August 1953. During the summer of 1953 the young Marilyn Monroe was filming ‘River of No Return’ in the Canadian Rockies when she sustained an injury to her ankle, which prevented her from filming. During this time John Vachon, a photographer for LOOK magazine was sent on location to take photos on the film set. Monroe’s injury gave Vachon unusual access and repeated opportunity to capture the Hollywood star with her guard down, including photos of Monroe and her then fiancé Joe DiMaggio. For some unexplained reason only 2 of the photos that Vachon took made it into LOOK magazine and the rest were filed away for nearly 60 years…..until now! Marilyn: August 1953 features the stunning unpublished black and white photos taken during this time. The book also features facsimiles of Vachon’s handwritten daily letters to his wife and insightful original essays on both Monroe and the photographer, which makes this book a treasure for Monroe collectors as well as lovers of fine photography. John Vachon Profile: John Vachon (1914-1975) earned his stripes as a documentary photojournalist and while a member of the renowned Farm Security Administration (FSA) group that included Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and others – all recognized as titans of twentieth-century photography. After his time at the FSA, Vachon shot more than 450 assignments for LOOK magazine. His Pseudo-candid sessions with Marilyn Monroe in 1953 captured a reigning Hollywood star as the girl next door! In his ability to present her humanity without either idealization or guile, he’s given the legions of Monroe fans worldwide a very rarely seen portrait of their idol.
