The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is selling off a former Royal Marines base in Devon.

Agents Jones Lang LaSalle have been appointed by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which manages land and property on behalf of the MOD, to find a buyer for RM Turnchapel.

The base, in Plymstock, was formerly the home of 539 Assault Squadron which has now moved to the new £30 million Devonport Naval Base at Tamar. Operations ceased at RM Turnchapel earlier this year after it was declared surplus to military requirements.

The site is made up of three hectares of land with a further three hectares of river bed which includes slippage and cranage. There is also a secure area within which is a variety of warehouse, office and engineering facilities.

Martin Lloyd, DIO Head of Disposals South, said:

“DIO’s priority is to support our Armed Forces as they prepare for operations by providing the facilities they need. We continually examine ways of improving military capability and value for money for the taxpayer. As part of this approach, we keep the size and location of bases under constant review.

“We are committed to selling off surplus assets to ensure the military estate is no larger than necessary to meet operational needs.”

Charles Kislingbury of Jones Lang LaSalle which has been appointed to handle the sale said:

“This a unique property which has very exciting potential being one of the very few properties that are released to the market with deep water access. I can see the property appealing to a wide range of interested parties but particularly those who require access to and from the water.”

The property will be placed on the market in the New Year and sold by way of a formal tender.
