DIO delivers hi-tech offices for US Defence communications

Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has delivered state-of-the-art offices for American military communications staff based at a North Yorkshire airbase.

United States Visiting Forces have moved into the £45 million facility at RAF Menwith Hill, near Harrogate.

Working with industry partners Balfour Beatty, Mott MacDonald and NG Bailey, DIO began construction of the building in spring 2009. The facility was completed on time and to budget in summer 2011.

Prior to work starting on the building, a number of projects were needed to clear the site to make room for the new development. This involved the re-routing of services and demolition of buildings within the construction footprint.

Mark Derham, DIO Project Manager, said

“DIO’s priority is to support the UK’s Armed Forces and our Defence allies. This is an excellent example of team collaboration on a technically very complex facility.

“The project required a huge amount of detailed design review and thorough construction site control in order to achieve the required build quality that would meet our clients exacting requirements.”

RAF Menwith Hill is an integral part of the U.S. Department of Defense world-wide defence communications network. Its primary mission is to provide intelligence support of UK, US and allied interests.
