A brand new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), which will provide soldiers’ families with a modern sports and recreation facility, has recently opened in the Service Families Accommodation area in Warminster.

The MUGA, which cost £75K to build and includes a floodlit, all weather playing area with goals and basket ball hoops, as well as outside fitness equipment and a picnic area, took six weeks to complete and was officially opened on Tuesday.

A grant of £60,000 from the Army Welfare Grant System – which was set up to enhance the welfare of service personnel and families – helped towards the completion of the project, with the remainder coming from HQ Collective Training Group (CTG).

The project was managed and delivered by Headquarters Warminster Garrison with support from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). The design and construction work was carried out by Lightmain – a British company specialising in sports and play design and installation – and the electrical work completed by SSE.

Opening the new facility, Brigadier Hyams, Commander CTG, said:

“I am extremely pleased to be opening this new Multi Use Games Area, which provides a facility the younger members of our service families can use all year round.”

Leo O’Shea, Director of Service Delivery for the DIO said:

“The DIO is proud to have supported this worthwhile project.

“The Service Delivery element of the DIO plays a vital role in the day to day living of the UK military family which is critical to the mission readiness of our overall military force.

“This project is just one example of how we are supporting our soldiers and their families.”

Even before its official opening the MUGA was being used daily and has already proved to be a great success.
