Development plans for North Luffenham Army barracks approved

Planning permission has been granted for 326 new kennels, specialist dog training facilities, a veterinary clinic and squadron headquarter offices at St George’s Barracks in North Luffenham . The development will enable 1st Military Working Dog Regiment (1MWD Regt), currently based in Sennelager,  Germany, to relocate to North Luffenham by the end of 2017.  The move is part of the Army Basing Programme, which will see more than 5,000 British Army personnel plus their families return from Germany to various UK locations this year and return all troops from Germany by 2020. Troops get back to basics on Salisbury Plain

Soldiers have been getting back to the basics of war fighting whilst exercising on Salisbury Plain. Troops from 1st Battalion Irish Guards have successfully completed a two week exercise – Exercise Wessex Storm – which was designed to get them away from the Afghanistan-specific training that has occupied our troops for so long. Military students learn valuable lessons on Salisbury Plain

Military students gathered on Salisbury Plain to learn how a British Army division is deployed during a display of the capabilities of a ‘Land formation’. The annual "Land Combat Power" demonstration took place recently over three days, organised by troops from 3rd (United Kingdom) Division based in Bulford. Salisbury Plain hosts largest military exercise in ten years

Six thousand soldiers and 300 armoured vehicles from units from the 7th Armoured Brigade (the Desert Rats) have taken part in their final training exercise – the largest on Salisbury Plain in ten years – before heading off to Afghanistan. One of the final brigades to deploy in a combat role, Germany-based 7th Armoured Brigade put its soldiers, from all three services, through vigorous paces this month as it prepares for the drawdown of British troops from Helmand Province. The tour itself will be like no other, with soldiers deploying for about eight months instead of the usual six.

Scottish soldiers get soccer pitch to sharpen shooting skills

Soldiers at a Scottish barracks can now take a well-deserved break from their duties in Afghanistan after the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) transformed a piece of derelict land into a new football pitch. Working with industry partner Turner Estate Solutions (TES), DIO delivered the all-weather sports area for The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS). The facility has been completed in time for soldiers in the infantry battalion to enjoy upon their return from operations to their base at Glencorse Barracks, Penicuik, in September.

Soldiers return to Plain for award-winning archaeology project

An award-winning project which uses archaeology to aid the recovery of injured soldiers is continuing its success on Salisbury Plain – unearthing a range of Anglo-Saxon treasures on the military training area . Troops get set to manoeuvre onto Salisbury Plain

Some 400 soldiers are getting ready to manoeuvre onto Salisbury Plain to take part in a week-long final training exercise before deploying to Afghanistan. MOD St Athan hangars support Afghanistan logistics drive

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is submitting a planning application to Vale of Glamorgan Council for a change of use to two hangars at MOD St Athan that will create local jobs. It is planned to use the hangars, which are currently vacant, to store military equipment as the UK begins withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. The plans will see the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) temporary storage capacity increase to help manage the return of equipment to the UK.
