Professor Tord Berglundh is the winner of the Astra Tech Scientific Award 2012

Mölndal, Sweden, May 16, 2012. The prestigious Astra Tech Scientific Award 2012 was awarded to Professor Tord Berglundh, Sweden, for his significant contribution to research related to oral implants. Being the third winner of the Astra Tech Scientific Award, Professor Berglundh received SEK 100,000.

The Scientific Award Committee presented Professor Berglundh with this year’s award because, “Your body of work has been notable by both its prodigious volume and high quality. The committee felt that you have fulfilled the highest standards in regard to every aspect of what is required to be the recipient of this prestigious award.”

”I’m very honored and happy to receive the Astra Tech Scientific Award and on behalf of myself and my team I would sincerely like to thank the Award committee – Clark Stanford, Michael Norton, and Lyndon Cooper for being selected,” says Professor Berglundh. Tord Berglundh graduated (LDS) in 1978 in Gothenburg and received his specialist certificate in periodontics in 1992. In 1994, he received the Docent (Associate Professor) degree, and in 2002, he became a Professor at the Department of Periodontology at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg.

Research Competition
The Astra Tech World Congress 2012 Research Competition received over 100 exciting and inspiring abstracts in the categories basic research and clinical research. Eight abstracts made the final cut and were chosen for oral presentations. The winners were then selected by the distinguished members of the Scientific Committee. And the winners are…

Francesco Pieri, Italy, in the category clinical research. His winning presentation was titled “Rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla using short implants or sinus augmentation with simultaneous standard-length implant placement. A 3-year randomized clinical trial.”

Theofilos Koutouzis, USA, in the category basic research, with a presentation titled “Innate immune receptor expression in peri-implant tissues of patients with different susceptibility to periodontal diseases.”
