Press Release 27 May 2010 The annual charity motorcycle event Breast Way Round in aid of Macmillan Cancer support will visit the Macdonald Aviemore Resort on Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of May 2010. Breast Way Round is a four day female charity motorcycle event which aims to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. This year, the event aims to raise £100,000 for the charity which celebrates its 100th birthday in 2011. The motorcyclists follow a pre planned route which takes in some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland including Aviemore in the Cairngorms. Gerry McGee, chief executive at Macdonald Aviemore Resort, said: “The Macdonald Aviemore Resort is gearing up to welcome those who will be taking part in this year’s Breast Way Round event. Breast Way Round does a fantastic job of raising awareness and funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and we are pleased to welcome such an event to the Macdonald Aviemore Resort. There are sure to be many miles covered over the course of the weekend and the Resort boasts many facilities which we hope will help the motorcyclists unwind at the end of a long day.” More than 100 motorcyclists are expected to take part in this year’s event. The event has gathered momentum and has seen a surge in popularity as the word spreads about the women in the pink Mohicans, pink high visibility vests and guys in decorated bras who accompany the motorcyclists on their ride. There will be a prize of an Arai helmet donated by AJ Clark Construction, Kilmarnock for the winner of the best decorated bra. ShirleyAnn Barnes, event coordinator, Breast Way Round said: “It makes me proud that this event has become motivating for many women. It raises the profile of the Female Motorcyclist, creating an atmosphere of friendship and fun whilst raising fabulous funds for the inspirational work that Macmillan Cancer Support achieves. Every single copper penny donated is used to help alleviate the financial crisis that can accompany the diagnosis of cancer.” The Macdonald Aviemore Resort’s Peregrine Suite will host the Breast Way Round evening entertainment on Saturday the 29th May 2010. The evening will include a special Macmillan Cancer Support raffle and charity auction which will feature a break at the Macdonald Aviemore Resort, pink Dr Marten boots and vouchers for Knockhill Racing Circuit. The event finishes in Glasgow, George Square on Monday 31st May 2010. On arrival, the motorcyclists will be given a police escort into the city centre where a party with host Sean Batty and live music is planned to celebrate the end of the event. In 2007 ShirleyAnn Barnes from Kilmarnock, a long term sufferer of fibromyalgia, made the decision to organise a small motorcycle run for ladies around the West Coast of Scotland. The aim was to raise some funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Little did she know the massive impact that this decision would have, and Breast Way Round was launched. ShirleyAnn was inspired to ride at the tender age of 41 years by her best friend Alyson Porter. When Alyson was diagnosed with cancer her bravery and fighting spirit inspired ShirleyAnn to do something worthwhile and due to the help that MacMillan Cancer Support gave to Alyson and her family during her treatment, this was the charity that she chose to support. The first event was held in May 2008 where 65 motorcyclists took part and raised £26,650. In 2009, £36,425 was raised.
