Destia has signed an agreement with Finavia for the apron extension work at Helsinki Airport. The apron extension will be implemented in order to increase the capacity for transit traffic. The work will begin in autumn 2015 and be completed in 2020. The estimate for the total cost of the project is about €100 million.
The project is carried out based on the alliance model, whereby the customer, designers and contractors work jointly in the execution of the project. In accordance with the alliance model, the contract will begin at the development phase.
At an area of some 45 hectares, the contract comprises apron and taxiway infrastructure work connected to the extension of the apron. It includes earth construction, excavation, foundation and concrete construction, sewer construction and other duct work as well as electrical and telematics work in the area.
“Helsinki Airport is one of the leading airports in Europe when measured in the number of airline passengers heading towards Asia. By expanding the terminal, we will be able to offer them higher quality service and receive larger wide-body aircraft at Helsinki Airport,” says Kari Savolainen, CEO of Finavia.
The contract is a significant part of the project to increase capacity at Helsinki Airport. Destia has been selected as one of the main contractors for the project.
“In the project, we will utilise Destia’s strong and diverse infrastructure expertise. As a working environment, an airport is very demanding. The area is home to many operators, and it experiences constantly changing situations. The co-operative project also requires flexibility and the integration of many airport functions in order to ensure fluent air traffic. As an environment, an airport sets special requirements for safety and, in our execution, safety will also be at the heart of everything,” says Minna Heinonen, Executive Vice President of Destia.
