DHL assists in transforming the lives of Guatemalan children with cleft lips and palates
For the sixth year, DHL Global Forwarding shipped supplies for Iowa MOST medical mission
MIAMI, Fla. – June 11, 2012: DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, once again assisted Iowa MOST (Miles of Smiles Team) with their recent medical mission to Huehuetenango, Guatemala. For six years in a row, DHL Global Forwarding has shipped supplies, such as gloves, syringes, blades, among other necessary medical equipment and office supplies, to Guatemala for Iowa MOST. The most recent shipment of supplies consisted of six large bulk boxes weighing approximately 833.8 lbs (379.000 kilos) from Iowa to a local hospital in Guatemala.
“For DHL it was a great pleasure to once again assist Iowa MOST in helping transform the lives of these individuals by granting them the opportunity to smile and overcome the difficulties that come with these conditions,” said Hans Toggweiler, CEO Industrial Projects for DHL Global Forwarding.
Iowa MOST is part of the Rotary District 6000 Humanitarian & Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization located in Iowa City, Iowa. The organization provides free surgical repair for cleft lip and palate, among other maxillofacial procedures, to individuals living in the western highlands of Guatemala. The organization has chosen to provide medical care for this population given the high incidence of cleft lips and palates among the Mayans of this community.
Each year Iowa MOST conducts approximately 50 to 70 procedures with the help of volunteer physicians from the U.S. and Guatemala. The week-long missions are made possible by generous contributions from District 600 Rotary clubs as well as corporate and individual donations of funds, equipment, supplies and the time of medical and non-medical volunteers.
