DHL’s Standard Forwarding earns SmartWay Partner Status Again
- New fleet and Driver Training Program contributes to company’s commitment to protecting the environment
East Moline, IL - May 10, 2012: Standard Forwarding, a U.S. less than truckload (LTL) carrier, and subsidiary of DHL Freight, has been awarded SmartWay Transport Partnership status for the fourth year in a row. As a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partner, the company reinforces its commitment to the environment. The Partnership is an innovative collaboration between the EPA and the freight industry, designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.
“We take great pride in being named a SmartWay Partner; it recognizes our proactive, ongoing approach to reducing our carbon footprint,” said John Ward, president of Standard Forwarding. “We recognize that every one of the miles we travel is an opportunity to contribute to a cleaner environment.”
With 40 new tractors in its fleet and a recently launched Driver Training Program, Standard Forwarding has made great strides in further reducing greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions. The tractors are estimated to show an 11 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the tractors they are replacing. That is 955 tons of reduced CO2 emissions per year, or the equivalent of CO2 absorption of 145 large trees.
“Our Driver Training Program has far exceeded our expectations in instilling more environmentally friendly steps as part of our employees’ daily routines,” said Terry Olsen, vice president of Operations for Standard Forwarding. “Reducing idle times is one simple step that has resulted in significant mile per gallon improvements that in the end demonstrate our continued hands-on approach to caring for the environment.”
Standard Forwarding is also in the process of installing on-board technology on all its tractors, allowing it to further reduce CO2 emissions by monitoring driver behavior and instituting best practices across its entire fleet. Other “green” measures include EDI transactions, an innovative website, and automated electronic invoice processing utilizing Oracle Content Management software.
These initiatives reflect Standard Forwarding’s parent company’s environmental protection program GoGreen. Deutsche Post DHL became the first logistics company in the world to set a quantifiable carbon efficiency goal and committed itself to improving the carbon efficiency of its own operations and those of its transportation subcontractors by 30 percent compared to the 2007 levels by the year 2020. This means a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions for every letter and parcel delivered, every ton of cargo transported and every square meter of warehouse space used by the year 2020.
Launched in February 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial strategies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies. The Partnership currently has over 2,800 Partners.
