LAXEY MANX TARTAN GETS COMMONWEALTH FAME

Isle of Man, UK - During the Commonwealth Games, the Laxey Woollen Mills was proud to kit the Isle of Man team out with Laxey Manx Tartan trilby hats.

Large sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games provide the opportunity for traditional businesses to showcase their unique range of items they have to offer.

For the Isle of Man, it was their Laxey Manx Tartan. The Laxey Woollen Mills still remains the home for the islands traditional Tartan, drawing on over 100 years of textile industry experience.

The Isle of Man has a rich history of weaving and the earliest evidence of traditional homespun tweed dates back to the Viking era. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Robert Wood introduced the five colour Tartan based on Patricia McQuaid’s original design and Laxey Manx Tartan was born. Since that time Laxey Manx Tartan has been a symbol of the Isle of Man with a customer base that has reached as far as Hong Kong.

Dian Skelton who owns the Laxey Woollen Mills with her brother John, she is also a director at ViewPoint Software Services Limited and founder of the MostlyManx shop on the Isle of Man, commented on the appearance of the trilbys at in the Commonwealth Games:

“It was a very proud moment when we saw the Laxey Manx Tartan appear at the opening ceremony. The athletes wore the trilbys with pride and they even doffed their hats to the Queen.

“We weren't at all sure that the woollen trilbys would work with the training gear they were wearing. However, they were extremely well received, we saw several of the girls were wearing them around the games village.”
