A Yorkshire group of friends have vowed to scale Britain’s highest peaks in order to raise vital funds for the cancer centre that helped a team member over five years ago.

Organiser Tom Prestwich, of Leeds, West Yorkshire will be joined by six friends who will take on the Three Peaks challenge by climbing Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike on the weekend of June 6, to raise money for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.

Joining Tom on the once in a lifetime challenge will be girlfriend Debbie Bowman and friends Lee Roper, Lindsay Roper, Peter Lulham, Peter Love and Andy Daniel, who will trek a total of 25 miles, ascending a total of 10,000ft
and drive 450 miles in aid of the world class Centre, which treated Debbie for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma over five years ago.

Speaking of the fundraiser Tom said: “The Yorkshire Cancer Centre was an amazing help to Debbie when she was going through an understandably really rough time. Taking part in this fundraiser is our way of giving back to such a vital resource.

“During the challenge itself we are allowing ourselves the full weekend to complete the challenge, giving leeway for traffic in between peaks, but ideally our goal is to finish within 24 hours.”

Tom added: “Our target is to raise £1,000 - anything exceeding this would be a true achievement. We are grateful for any support we receive – the team is also on the lookout for a minibus to help travel between the peaks, so if anyone could donate one to us for the duration of the challenge it would be incredible.

“Unfortunately cancer is something that affects everyone and it was really important to Debbie to be able to donate as much funds as possible to help people that need care as much as she did.”

Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal Director Sheila O’Shea said: “We are always so grateful when former patients and relatives pull together to give something back to the Centre.

“The money raised by generous members of the community means that we continue to offer the best possible care to our patients and their families. This wouldn’t be possible without people like Tom and Debbie.”

The Yorkshire Cancer Centre serves a population of 2.6 million people across Yorkshire at its state-of-the-art unit at St James’s Hospital in Leeds.

The Centre aims to raise £10million to boost clinical research, buy the latest generation of medical equipment, and provide arts and garden projects to enhance the patient environment.
