SYSOPENDIGIA contributes source code of its 3G Linux smartphone to open-source

SYSOPENDIGIA today announced that it will contribute to open-source the software created and modified for the 3G Linux smartphone.

The SYSOPENDIGIA 3G Linux smartphone has been created using Linux operating system and other open-source software components, as well as commercially licensed Qtopia application platform and user interface from Trolltech.

"We see that the only way for the mobile industry to answer the rapidly growing need for new functionality and services is increased re-use of existing software asset. Leveraging open-source software is a good way to avoid re-implementing such functionality that is not important for differentiation." says Tuukka Turunen, Director, Special Projects from SYSOPENDIGIA.

"In SYSOPENDIGIA we have created for our customers and partners a large amount of software the source code of which is publicly available under various proprietary and open-source licenses. We do believe in open-source and have worked a long time in utilizing it such a way that creates added value to both our customers and the open-source community", continues Jari-Pekka Heikkilä, Vice President of Smartphone unit SYSOPENDIGIA.

The source code to be contributed contains Linux kernel and device drivers created and modified by SYSOPENDIGIA. The packages can be found from Sourceforge.net under "SYSOPENDIGIA 3G Linux smartphone" project in the “Operating System Kernels” category at the end of February 2008.

The hardware platform of the device is based on dual chip architecture with Marvell PXA300 application processor and Ericsson WCDMA 3G modem. Linux kernel version is 2.6.14 with Monahans/PXA patches from Marvell, and Qtopia platform version is 4.3.

SYSOPENDIGIA is demonstrating the 3G Linux smartphone device in Mobile World Conference at Barcelona next week. Public demonstration will be held together with Trolltech at their stand #2C72 on Tuesday 12th Feb between 17.00 and 19.00.
