Digia releases Qt 5.1
New version includes over 3000 enhancements, significant improvements to Qt Quick and preliminary Android & iOS support
July 3, 2013 — Digia has announced the release of Qt 5.1, the leading cross-platform application and user interface (UI) development framework. Qt 5.1 includes significant improvements to Qt Quick, the Qt-specific declarative UI language making it easier to develop graphically-rich UIs quickly and efficiently, it brings in new APIs, and improves performance and stability with the implementation of over 3000 enhancements to the previous version. The new version also introduces preliminary support for Android and iOS, solidifying Qt as a true cross-platform framework for native development across the most popular operating systems and targets.
Qt simplifies developers’ lives by enabling them to produce applications faster with intuitive user interfaces for multiple targets in the desktop, embedded and mobile space. It also makes it easier to address the paradigm shifts that touchscreen devices require. Qt 5.1 is fully integrated with the Qt Creator 2.7 IDE, resulting in a smooth development experience from within a single package.
The updates to Qt Quick present the new Qt Quick Controls, a ‘toolbox’ of reusable UI controls based on Qt Quick 2, Qt Quick Layouts, and more additions which reduce the amount of code developers have to write themselves. It makes developers lives easier, enabling them to quickly develop cross-platform applications. This capability is particularly valuable in industries that require modern looking UIs with animations and where rapid prototyping is necessary.
The Technology Previews for Qt on Android and iOS enable developers to start developing for the two most popular mobile operating systems while providing an easy way to port applications from other platforms by reusing the same code base. Most of the Qt functionality and tool integration is already in place to start developing mobile applications. Complete ports to iOS and Android will come with Qt 5.2 later this year.
Qt’s ability to deliver impressive graphics is enhanced by the use of OpenGL ES, the version of the graphics application programming interface designed specifically for embedded systems and mobile devices. This makes it easier to develop and deploy rich graphics with velvet-like animations and transitions as well as smoothly-rendered 2D and 3D animations on high-end architectures as well as on devices with relatively limited performance, such as mobile phones, tablets and low-cost development platforms.
Qt supports all major desktop operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, embedded operating systems such as embedded Linux, Windows Embedded as well as the most widely deployed real-time operating systems for embedded devices – VxWorks, Neutrino and INTEGRITY – and popular mobile OSes including Android, iOS (Technology Previews), BlackBerry, and SailFish.
The commercial version of Qt 5.1, Qt Enterprise, can be downloaded as a 30-day free trial from qt.digia.com. The open source version can be downloaded from the Qt Project, qt-project.org.

Digia and its partners, KDAB and ICS, will co-host this year’s Qt Developer Days (www.qtdeveloperdays.com) conference, the premier Qt event of the year in Europe (Berlin: October 7-9) and North America (San Francisco: November 6-8). Qt Developer Days is the event where new users to Qt, veteran Qt developers and decision makers can learn hands-on how and why to use Qt to develop highly-performing and impressive UIs and applications. Registration for Qt Developer Days 2013 Berlin is open and San Francisco soon to follow www.qtdeveloperdays.com.

About Qt
Used by over 500,000 developers worldwide, Qt is a full framework that enables the development of powerful, interactive and platform-independent applications. Qt applications run native on desktop, embedded and mobile host systems, enabling them to deliver performance that is far superior to other cross-platform application development frameworks. Qt’s support for multiple platforms and operating systems allows developers to save significant time related to porting to other devices.
Qt is created by developers for developers where making developers’ lives easier is top priority. It provides an incomparable developer experience with the tools necessary to create amazing user experiences. Qt is platform agnostic and believes in making sure that all developers are able to target multiple platforms with one framework by simply reusing code. Qt gives freedom to the developer. Code less. Create more. Deploy everywhere.
