Dimension designs digital storage solution for Radio Sweden
Dimension designs digital storage solution for Radio Sweden - 250,000 older recordings will be preserved The IT integrator Dimension has been awarded an order from Sveriges Radio Förvaltnings AB for a data storage solution for older archival material. The project, the first stage of which is worth SEK 4.9 million, is designed to digitize and preserve audio recordings from the archives of Radio Sweden. Approximately 250,000 recordings totaling over 14 years in playing time will be stored digitally. The system will mainly comprise older recordings. Rarities include a wax cylinder recording of Enrico Caruso from the late 19th century and the first children's programs recorded in 1925 by famed Swedish program director Sven Jerring. "Many of the older recordings in our archive are being destroyed by age," says Bernt Stigson, who is responsible for digital storage at Sveriges Radio Förvaltnings AB. "Some of the wax cylinder recordings might only make it through one more playback. Now we have the chance to archive them in a better, safer manner, while at the same time making them more accessible." The new system will primarily store wax cylinder recordings, 78 rpm records and vintage reel to reels. The material comes in part from the Gramophone Archive and in part from the Radio Archive. Some of the old documents from the Document Archive will be stored as well. "Our solution for Sveriges Radio Förvaltning is a good example of how Dimension, as an integrator, assumes turnkey responsibility and creates a customized system," says Sven Uthorn, Managing Director of Dimension. "This is an enjoyable project for us in that it is a new customer and we can play a part in preserving Radio Sweden's recorded treasures." The storage solution will initially have a capacity of 10 TB (terabytes), which can easily be expanded. Installation will begin this spring, with the system scheduled to go online in the autumn. Dimension has been given turnkey responsibility for everything from project management to training for the supplied solution. Technically, Dimension's solution, which is based on SAN technology (Storage Area Network), will consists primarily of robotics and routers from Adic, servers from Sun Microsystems, a disk storage system from Hitachi Data Systems and switches from Brocade.
