Royal Swedish Library and Dimension create unique digital archive There are 15 million web sites in Sweden, according to a unique project in which the Royal Swedish Library has collected all Swedish publications available on the Internet. To store all this information for posterity, catalogue it and make it searchable, the library has chosen a storage solution from the IT integrator Dimension. Since the 17th century the Royal Swedish Library has had the important responsibility of filing and making available all material printed in Sweden. Since a growing share of this material is published only in electronic form, new demands have been placed on collection and filing. Dimension has developed and implemented the advanced storage solution that serves as the platform for the library's new, digital archive. "We have been cooperating with the Royal Library in IT infrastructure for several years, primarily in security and server solutions," says Sven Uthorn, Managing Director of Dimension AB. "Being entrusted with supplying a storage solution for this unique Swedish project is an honor. Thanks to our experience and competence in advanced storage solutions, we have been able to meet the library's high demands." The library's project consists of collecting and scanning all Swedish web sites targeted to the general public. The collection is extensive, and each search takes several months, being that it involves around 15 million web sites. A new online search is conducted about twice a year. Since the archive must be able to grow quickly and without limitations, high demands are placed on the solution's scalability. "The amount of information available online is growing quickly," says Allan Arvidson, the project manager at the library. "The first collection in 1997 generated approximately 3.3 million pages, or 140 GB of data, compared with the most recent collection's 15 million pages and 1,200 GB of data. Expansion opportunities and scalability are therefore important parameters for us. As the national library of Sweden, we are responsible for storing information for posterity, which also makes the ability to migrate to new storage media an important argument." The solution was placed in operation in early May after careful testing. Dimension provided training for the library's operational staff. Data storage and so-called SAN solutions are an important part of Dimension's offerings in business-critical infrastructure solutions. In this area, the company cooperates with Veritas, Hitachi Data Systems and Sun, among others.
