POYi launches 69th annual photojournalism competition
"Sports Photographer of the Year" debuts as new Premier category, Arab Uprisings and Japan Earthquake cited as "Impact 2011" categories
Pictures of the Year International, a program of the Reynolds Journalism Institute, launches its 69th annual competition, setting the gold standard for documentary photography, photojournalism, visual editing, and journalistic multimedia.
New for 2011, POYi expands its Sports categories and creates a "Sports Division," with an independent jury panel. The division includes new categories for Sports Multimedia, Sports Editing, and a Premier "Sports Photographer of the Year" award to recognize a portfolio of work throughout the year. The winner of the Premier portfolio award receives a $1,000 cash award and a Tiffany crystal trophy.
POYi provides an online registration and entry process for efficient preparations and uploading. The "Call for Entries" is now posted at http://poyi.org/ and provides complete details on all the categories and guidelines. Online registration and entry will be open through Thursday, January 12, 2012.
POYi is the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism program in the world. The mission of the annual POYi competition is to extend the reach of photojournalists by providing educational public exhibitions and reflecting the news events, social issues, and cultural trends of our time. When you enter Pictures of the Year International, your work reaches out to citizens worldwide and becomes a part of visual history.
This past year experienced some of the most significant news events in history with the Japan Earthquake and the Arab Uprisings. POYi seeks to honor those photojournalists who chronicled the earthquake and resulting tsunami, and coverage of the civil defiance and revolutions in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Syria, Yemen and other regional Mideast / Northern Africa nations.
POYi's eight prestigious Premier categories return for 2011, including "Documentary Project of the Year" honoring the best extended photojournalistic series or project. In addition, POYi continues its six-decade tradition of spotlighting the very best in long-form documentary project work with the "World Understanding Award," the "Global Vision Award," and the "Community Awareness Award." Premier awards total more than $10,000 and includes Tiffany crystal trophies and engraved plaques. Last year 180 photographers and editors were recognized across 48 categories as the best in the world from more than 48,000 submitted photographs, printed pages, and web-based presentations.
Grounded in a prestigious collegiate environment, POYi's goal is to serve as a professional development, motivational, and educational tool for all visual journalists. The Missouri School of Journalism will host the judging in a public forum February 8 -28, open to everyone who wishes to attend. In addition, POYi will return its free, real-time webcasting of the judging via Adobe Connect. This web conferencing software provides an unprecedented virtual experience to witness the presentations and jury panel comments from any Internet access. The three consecutive weeks of review will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Listed is a tentative schedule for the upcoming contest season:
- December 12 — Electronic registration and entry uploading platform activated.
- January 12 — Deadline for all entries to be electronically submitted.
- February 8 - 28 — Judging period for three consecutive weeks.
- April — POYi Exhibition, Education, and Awards Program to be announced.
