Fluffy’s Guardian Angel : Guest Post
Good morning Asha Marie Pena,
What a pleasure it is to be a part of your correspondence about my best gal Fluffy! I bet Fluffy and your son Josiah would get along together famously! Fluffy loves being around children - especially six year olds.
With all the recent bad weather and tornados, and it looks like you were close to some of the worst weather, it brings back memories of the nasty snowstorm that Fluffy and I were in that led to the book. Fluffy and I were on a trip to Missouri in December - I never said I was bright. Who would go out of their way to go to Missouri in the winter? At any rate, that is where the misadventure of Fluffy occurred. I let her out one morning to play and overnight there was a huge snowstorm. She loved playing and rolling in the snow. She met many friends, rabbits, squirrels, quail, and deer. Unfortunately, she lost her way and could not find her way home. I became very worried and started looking for her. I looked all around in the woods but she was nowhere to be found. She couldn't hear my voice calling for her and late at night I went to bed which was lonely for me, Fluffy must be very, very lonely in the woods by herself. The next several days I scoured the county in the Missouri Ozarks. I must have talked to every farmer for miles. No one had seen her.
Just a little history on the Keeshond breed. The Keeshond is a double coated breed consisting of a wooly undercoat and longer outer coat hair. They were probably of arctic origin. In the 1400's there was a war started in Holland between the Patriots and the Orangists, At the time the Leader of the Patroits named the Keeshond as , "the dog of Holland". Eventually the Orangists won the war and for spite they started killing every Keeshond they could see. The surviving Keeshonds retreated to the farm country and wilderness areas. Because of this some of the Keeshonds lived on to carry their breed, where today they are very popular around the world.
With all of the dangers she encountered in the next 28 days, I can only conclude she was protected by a Guardian Angel. When James Hill, the "Gentle Giant," found her under an abandoned pickup truck her heavy coat was covered with ice, so at this point she was in dire straits. He took her to his house and chased his other dogs outside so Fluffy had some helpful recuperation time. He was finally able to place Fluffy outside with the other dogs and they happily accepted her.
I'm convinced she had a Guardian Angel because even now at home she will look over shoulder, smile and let out a little "yip" and roll over.
