Trust talks with parents and kids about child sexual exploitation
Experts will be helping to raise awareness of how to spot the signs and report concerns about child sexual exploitation (CSE) when they speak to people at St Ledger Homes’ Community Fun Day next week.
Doncaster Children’s Services Trust CSE champions will be at the event taking place at Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday 26 May, 10am to 4pm.
The CSE champions talked with more than 600 local people during their first walk about event in Doncaster last month. The CSE champions have been recently recognised at a national awards ceremony for going the extra mile to tackle child sexual exploitation.
They will be at the event to chat with young people, mums, dads and residents about how to spot the signs and more importantly what to do if they have any concerns that someone is at risk.
The types of behaviours which may point to a young person being caught up in sexual exploitation include:
- regularly going missing from home
- receiving gifts from unknown sources
- self-harming
- being withdrawn from their families
The Trust’s Head of Referral and Response Anne Chester-Walsh said: “Protecting children from child sexual exploitation is a job for us all. It is really important that child sexual exploitation isn’t hidden, and all our young people, parents, grandparents and communities have an understanding of what child sexual exploitation is.
“Events like these are an opportunity for us to talk with people about spotting the signs and how to report their suspicions.
“By encouraging everyone to help us spot the common signs of child sexual exploitation we hope to hear about the problems, even when the victim doesn’t want to tell anyone. It is only by us all working together, people in our communities being our eyes and ears, can we hope to stamp out child sexual exploitation and ensure the safety of our young people in Doncaster.”
