SUSTAINABLE EXPANSION PLANS FROM NEW GUILDFORD DRAIN DOCTOR
Former civil drainage contractor Paul Cornthwaite has taken on the Guildford franchise of Drain Doctor Plumbing Ltd (www.draindoctor.co.uk), the UK’s premier combined emergency plumbing and drainage contractors. Paul is taking on a business in a highly populated area that also includes Basingstoke and the surrounding towns and villages.
Paul and his partner Anna had been looking at purchasing a business franchise for the past two years. “You name it, we looked at it,” said Paul.
“None of them offered the same support or genuine opportunity to make money as Drain Doctor.”
Paul has worked in the drainage industry as a contractor working on the highways and the Army barracks at Aldershot for the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This gave Paul experience of domestic plumbing and drainage as well as commercial drainage repairs associated with the site’s infrastructure.
After researching various plumbing/drainage franchise opportunities, Paull decided on Drain Doctor because it has a proven system that offers a largely recession-proof opportunity.
He said: “I can still be an independent operator running my own business but with all the back-up that comes with being part of a large national organisation. You just don’t get the same support with other franchises that you do with a Drain Doctor franchise.”
Paul has started his business with one fully equipped van to deal with most plumbing and drainage emergencies and he is working as a technician while at the same time marketing the business. He plans to grow the business in a sustainable way, adding more vans and technicians in the coming months.
Paul continued: “I intend to expand the business and make the franchise as big as possible for the area, which has a population of around 800,000 at the moment. Within three to six months I plan to take on another fully equipped van with a technician.
“After 12-18 months I will look to expand and hope to have a third van with another technician in operation which will allow me concentrate more on marketing the business.

In his spare time (“what’s that?” he joked) Paul enjoys helping out at Farnham Rugby Club and watching his teenage son – one of three – play rugby at the academy there.
