Event to inform major global study on the future of energy for the region

28 July 2014, Buenos Aires – The World Energy Council will be gathering senior energy strategists and key decision-makers from the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region and overseas in a workshop today in Buenos Aires to inform a major global energy study by the WEC.

At the event nearly 30 experts from the region will debate and discuss the most pertinent issues shaping the energy landscape of the Latin America and Caribbean region. The conclusions will inform the next phase of one of the WEC’s flagship studies, the World Energy Scenarios.

The analysis undertaken in Buenos Aires will build on the WEC’s recently published report “World Energy Scenarios: Composing Energy Futures to 2050”, which set out two different futures, the Jazz and the Symphony Scenarios. The WEC is now looking to go further with this latest analysis which will look to identify the trends and opportunities in the energy sector.

“Our 2013 report has found that meeting the growth in energy demand in the Latin American and Caribbean region will be a significant challenge,” said Gerald Davis, Executive Chair of the WEC’s World Energy Scenarios.

The 2013 study sees that in 2050, total primary energy supply in the LAC region will grow by between 2.3 and 3.8 times that of 2010, while meeting energy demand in electricity alone will require at least US$1.33 trillion of cumulative investment to 2050.

“We are using the framework of the WEC Jazz and Symphony Scenarios of 2013 as a starting point to investigate possible development trajectories for the LAC region, and for this the expertise of regional and national strategists will be crucial,” Davis added.

The workshop will be hosted by the Argentine Committee of the World Energy Council (Comité Argentino del Consejo Mundial de la Energía, CACME) and sponsored by Deloitte and Pluspetrol S.A.

Jorge Bacher, Chair of CACME, said: “CACME is very pleased to organise and host an event like the Scenarios Workshop for Latin America. This will allow our members and guests to directly understand the methods for constructing the WEC’s Scenarios, which are a useful tool to define strategies and energy policies”.

Mr Davis and Professor Karl Rose, Senior Director of the WEC study, will moderate discussions at the workshop. After the event they and their core team of international energy strategists will analyse the workshop results and present the initial findings during the WEC’s Executive Assembly in Cartagena, Colombia, in October.
