Peter Vesterbacka is perhaps best known for his role as Chief Marketing Officer at Rovio Entertainment Oy, the company behind the global phenomenon Angry Birds. But Vesterbacka's influence extends beyond the colorful bird game and he now sees great opportunities in digital education, known as edtech.

"Edtech is the future of learning in Scandinavia and Europe. We are in a world where digitalization is happening at a tremendous pace and where virtual education will be a central part of the development of future generations," says Vesterbacka, who is currently involved in digital learning, including through an advisory role in the Spotlight-listed company Wicket Gaming (under name change to edyoutec).

"I am passionate about developing what I call fun learning, i.e. using technology to create enjoyable learning. This is how I see people developing their knowledge and skills in the future," continues Vesterbacka, who believes that the Edtech industry is still in its infancy.

"Next to food, education is the biggest industry in the world and I foresee that digital educational tools will be worth thousands of billions of euros in the not too distant future," he says.

Edtech - great growth potential

According to Grand View Research, edtech had a global market size of USD 127 billion in 2022, a figure that is predicted to grow to USD 429.5 billion in 2030[1]. The growth is so far driven by hardware as digital classrooms are expanded with, among other things, virtual reality capacity, but it is in software that the major growth will take place in the future, according to Vesterbacka.

"What is now being built is digital infrastructure for learning, the next step is to add content. It is in this context that I get involved as an advisor. At Rovio, we managed to build one of the world's fastest growing consumer brands and I think similar journeys can be made in digital education."

Playful learning and serious games - paradigm shift for learning

It is in these areas that Wicket Gaming (edyoutec) operates, via the company's acquisition of the German Edtech Group Wegesrand, which was completed in October 2022.

Among other things, the company has developed a number of products for museums in Germany, with the aim of improving the experience and contributing to knowledge acquisition among visitors. A virtual product for training train drivers has also been launched, which enables the simulation of events linked to very heavy transport.

Vesterbacka believes that similar projects can be expected in a number of industries.

"The progress of digitalization creates opportunities to cost-effectively train personnel in simulated environments. This is a development we have seen for a long time, but which is now accelerating against the background of, among other things, the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Many traditional industries are now looking at how to move education to the digital world."
