Effnet founder receives Carlsson prize

EFFNET FOUNDER RECEIVES CARLSSON PRIZE Second technology prize won this year Dr. Mikael Degermark, a founder of Effnet Group AB ("EFFN" on Sweden's Nya Marknaden) has received the Chester Carlsson Research Prize 2000, an award from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, Kungliga Ingenjorsvetenskapsakademin (IVA). Dr. Degermark was a key developer of the world-renowned Luleå Algorithm for optimized IP forwarding and packet filtering. The Luleå Algorithm is the foundation of Effnet's award-winning technology, which has established Effnet as a leader in network-technology licensing. The Carlsson Prize was awarded to Dr. Degermark, "For ground-breaking efforts in developing the Internet, by new forwarding algorithms and IP header compression technology that cost effectively renders Internet possible via radio, and which resulted in international standards and the foundation of a company." The award recognizes Dr. Degermark's development of standards for IP header compression technology for wireless Internet. Those standards are now part of Effnet's development of the new wireless IP processing capabilities within the EffnetEdge Toolkit. Earlier this year, Dr. Degermark and his development team also received the 2000 "Framsteget", awarded for the best IT research project in Sweden by the Swedish magazine, "Ny Teknik." The Chester Carlsson Research Prize 2000 The Swedish descendant Chester Carlsson patented the first process for the dry copying, "xerographic method," which is the foundation of all modern photocopiers and laser printers. He also was a founder of Xerox Corporation. In remembrance of Mr. Carlsson, the Chester Carlsson Research Prize was created in 1985, and is presented to persons or institutions for significant research or development within the area of information science. It is also awarded for developments that have led to commercial or technically successful products, or for work in combining existing technologies that resulted in a new application. The prize was presented to Dr. Degermark at IVA in Stockholm on 22 November, 2000.
