Effnet Tests New Mobile Internet Protocol with Major Suppliers Effnet joined industry giants Siemens, Ericsson and Nokia to participate in a four-way test of each company's version of new IETF standard RFC 3095. The new standard - called Robust Header Compression or "ROHC" is viewed as essential for a commercially successful mobile wireless Internet. The test, which took place at Siemens' Roke Manor Laboratories over the period 30 July to 3 August, was to ensure that their four ROHC products are fully compatible. Results of the testing exceeded expectations, as all participants were able to support basic interconnection. Dr. Carsten Bormann of Universität Bremen TZI, co-chair of the IETF ROHC working group, said: "I'm glad we see such a high level of interoperability after the first week of testing by a good part of the most prominent manufacturers in this space." Dr. Mikael Degermark of the University of Arizona and Effnet, the other co-chair, added: "We are very pleased to see that the implementations have progressed rapidly. The development supports Effnet's strategy of focusing company resources more on ROHC." Mikael Degermark is a co- founder of Effnet and is today researching within Header Compression at the Tucson Labs, Effnet's research project with the University of Arizona, US. The Robust Header Compression Protocol is the proposed standard for transporting compressed headers over bandwidth-limited, high loss networks. It increases bandwidth efficiency through decreasing header overhead and minimizing packet loss. Designed with IP-based 3G mobile telephone systems in mind, it will be required for UMTS release four and will be needed in both base stations and handsets. With the aid of Effnet's ROHC, wireless carriers will be able to greatly improve capacity, performance and reliability. Earlier this year, Agere Systems licensed Effnet's Robust Header Compression technology. About Effnet Effnet innovates and licenses award-winning key technologies that resolve data speed, efficiency and security challenges in Internet Protocol (IP) networking and IT security. Effnet are technology leaders in the area of Header Compression, which increases the efficiency in IP- networks. Effnet's modular IP packet processing technology -- the EffnetEdgetm Toolkit -- as well as its complete firewall and router technology for hardware manufacturers, enable optimized performance. The wholly owned subsidiary, Wkit Security, offers data encryption and copy protection technologies, and security audit services for public and private sector companies.
