Effnet/Wkit has developed protection against a new security threat found in Web readers Wkit Online AB, a company within the Effnet group, has developed a new form of detection to protect against a newly discovered security hole in Web readers. - "The new security hole means that it is sufficient for a user simply to mark an incoming e-mail message in order for it to infect the computer with either a virus, a trojan or similar. Users who do not have Wkit's new protection can no longer safeguard themselves against unopened infected files," says Lars-Olov Guttke of Effnet/Wkit. The Web reader contains a function which installs programs on your computer via the Internet. The purpose of this function is to allow software to be upgraded. Anyone with the right knowledge can copy a certificate and use it to spread programs to users of Web readers. This can happen, for example, via e-mail when a disguised script is sent to the recipient as an attachment. It is then sufficient to mark the e-mail message in order for this code to subsequently activate some type of hostile activity towards your computer or your network. In this way you may, for example, quite unwittingly have installed a trojan on your hard disk.
