Hospital purchases two Versa HD linacs, Monaco treatment planning software and MOSAIQ Oncology Information System

BANGKOK, September 13, 2018 – Siriraj Hospital (Bangkok, Thailand), the country’s oldest and largest hospital, has recently acquired a pair of state-of-the-art Versa HD™ radiation therapy systems (linacs) from Elekta, in addition to the company’s Monaco® treatment planning software and MOSAIQ® Oncology Information System. The acquisition – part of a major radiotherapy department expansion – will enable Siriraj Hospital clinicians to more effectively treat their cancer patients.

The Versa HD linacs, which are the department’s fourth and fifth linac systems, will be delivered to the 2,000-bed medical center this month. Patient treatments are expected to begin in March 2019.

“Every plan has the potential to contribute to a better quality of life for each patient we care for,” says Assistant Professor Pittaya Dankulchai, MD, Siriraj Hospital radiation oncologist, Radiation Oncology Division, Department of Radiology. “The leading technology for radiotherapy planning – with strict individualized target optimization and treatment precision in both conventional volumetric arc therapy and radiosurgery – contributes to optimized treatment outcomes and even more so, improvement in the quality of life. We expect that with Versa HD – with its fast Agility MLC and High Dose Rate mode – as well as Monaco treatment planning and MOSAIQ, we will achieve our goals.”

Approximately 60 percent of the cancer burden in Thailand is due to five types of cancer: breast, cervix, colorectal, liver and lung cancers. Excluding melanoma, these five cancers accounted for 59.2 percent of incidence, 63.1 percent of mortality and 54.3 percent of 5-year prevalence.[1]

Versa HD is an advanced digital linear accelerator that, when combined with the Monaco treatment planning system, enables high definition dynamic radiosurgery (HDRS). HDRS makes it possible for highly targeted stereotactic treatments to be delivered throughout the body in standard door-to-door patient treatment slots of 15 minutes or less.

Monaco is powered by a fast Monte Carlo dose optimization engine which provides gold-standard accuracy, critical for advanced treatments. The software also employs multi-criterial optimization, which is designed to generate treatment delivery plans that maximize high doses to the tumor and minimize exposure to critical organs surrounding the target.

The hospital’s new MOSAIQ Oncology Information System will help Siriraj care providers efficiently manage all aspects of its radiation oncology program. MOSAIQ consolidates all patient information in its database and makes it accessible to all authorized department personnel – from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up – to enable the best possible care for every patient.
