Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment visited Elkem in Thamshavn
Elkem’s climate strategy and contribution to building competitive, green industry and jobs were among the topics discussed during the visit to Elkem in Thamshavn by the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen February 13.
Elkem is a leading producer of materials which are crucial in driving the green transition. Silicon from Elkem is used in electric cars, batteries and other renewable energy technologies, making it a key component in the green transition.
Elkem's Thamshavn plant produces silicon with only one-third of the global average of CO2 emissions for silicon production. The plant runs on hydropower, and has a heat recovery plant, which provides the local community with energy. Elkem has a climate strategy in line with the Paris agreement, and goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Sondre Valle Hestvik, Elkem's plant manager, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability and reducing emissions. "Elkem’s Thamshavn plant is a good example of how we can produce crucial raw materials for the green transition while reducing emissions. We’re happy to give the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment a tour of our plant and share how we together can contribute to reaching national and global climate goals," said Hestvik.
A level playing field and framework conditions that ensure global competitiveness were also discussed during the meeting. Access to clean and cost-efficient energy is particularly important for the industry’s competitiveness.
"We appreciated the Minister taking the time to visit us, and perceived that he wants to ensure a level playing field and predictable framework conditions for our industry," said Hestvik.
