Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment visits Elkem Fiskaa
Elkem’s contributions to achieving climate goals and building competitive, green industry and jobs were among the topics discussed during today’s visit to Elkem Fiskaa by the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Espen Barth Eide.
Elkem’s plant at Fiskaa is the largest producer of carbon solutions in the western world, supporting the production of the metals that the world needs to build a better and more sustainable future.
“We appreciate today’s visit from Minister Barth Eide, and we are pleased by the Norwegian government’s ambition to develop existing and future green industries in Norway. Elkem aims to be part of the solution to combat climate change – and to be one of the winners in the green transition. In order to achieve this, we are investing to reduce fossil CO2 emissions towards net zero by 2050, while growing our supplies of critical materials to growth markets like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Succeeding with a green transition also requires competitive framework conditions,” said Elkem’s CEO Helge Aasen.
Barth Eide participated in a tour of Elkem’s production facilities at Fiskaa, including the company’s extensive research and innovation facilities covering more than 10 000 square meters of advanced pilot testing facilities, laboratories and workshops, as well as Vianode’s pilot plant for sustainable battery materials.
The minister also met with participants in the “Young Start” program for young people who have dropped out of school, but are given a new chance through employment and on-the-job training at Elkem Fiskaa. This is a collaborative effort involving the local government, NAV (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration) and others.
