Its undulating, exotic cityscape has recently become the backdrop for the most award-winning Bond films of all time, Skyfall, however, Istanbul has far more to offer travellers, beyond its colourful rooftops. As Turkey’s largest city, it constitutes the country's economic, cultural, and historical heart. It has previously been named a European Capital of Culture, making it the world's tenth-most-popular tourist destination, while its historic centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spring is a great time to explore Istanbul, as the temperature is perfectly ambient for sightseeing and prices are cheaper than in the summer months. What’s more, the city’s parks, avenues, traffic roundabouts, and really anywhere there is open ground become awash with colourful tulips.  There is even a tulip festival in April to commemorate the flower!

Plenty of other events to interest visitors are also held, including International Istanbul Film Festival, which takes place from 30 March until 14 April. In addition to the prize for Best Film, there is even a Golden Tulip award to keep up with the spring theme! While in May, Turkey's newest music and art festival, Freshtival, draws famous local and international names to Istanbul’s Kucukciftlik Park for a weekend of dance, house, soul, ethnic and electronic music. Previous artists have included the Noisettes and Leftfield.

Encounters Travel (www.encounterstravel.com / 0800 088 6002) is offering a 10-day Anatolian Adventure tour from just £559 per person (saving £140 per person). Available for departure on 27 April, the price includes airport transfers from/to Istanbul, accommodation in four and five-star hotels with breakfast and some meals and the services of a local tour leader throughout. Flights not included. Starting in cosmopolitan Istanbul, the tour takes in the historic sites of Troy, Pergamum and Ephesus before following the ancient silk road to the unique region of Cappadocia and Turkey’s modern day capital city, Ankara, and ending with another night in Istanbul.
