Enea OSE® version 5.7 available now

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 17, 2013 – Enea® (NASDAQ OMX Nordic:ENEA) today announced version 5.7 of the Enea OSE real-time operating system (RTOS), adding significant performance upgrades and new functionality. Enea OSE is optimized for communication systems in the areas of wireless devices, telecom networking systems, medical equipment, automotive and transportation equipment, industrial automation and other embedded systems.

“We see a continued strong demand for OSE, and are investing in feature growth in close co-operation with our customers and partners”, said Markus Malmgren, director of products, Enea. “With the latest improvements in OSE 5.7 we continue to bring value to the ecosystem, making us fit for purpose in new product generations and prolonging the lifecycle of today’s products.”

  • The target interface of Enea OSE 5.7 is redesigned, lowering the kernel call overhead and improving common system call performance. Also, a flat interrupt model is introduced, adapting to the increased abstraction in modern hardware device architectures and their capability to buffer information. This allows OSE to run without nested interrupts, which in live telecom networks has caused throughput gain of 3.5-5%.
  • Further enhancements include updated compiler support to GCC version 4.6.3, bringing support for new instructions sets and taking advantage of features and optimizations in the compiler. Based on tests in real live telecom networks the footprint decrease is 10% when compiling with “-Os” instead of -O3, without performance decrease.
  • In Enea OSE 5.7 the memory manager implementation has been optimized and it is now possible to configure it to allow optimization for address translation performance over memory consumption. The faster handling of large pages in the Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB), which in live telecom networks has a performance increase of 2-5%, is also improving the OSE heap manager performance.
  • Finally, new hardware support includes the Freescale® QorIQ® T4240 and QorIQ® Qonverge B4860 System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures (with e6500 Power Architecture® cores), and the QorIQ® P5020 and P5040 (with e5500 Power Architecture® cores).

Enea OSE is one of the most widely deployed RTOSes on the planet, especially in networking infrastructure. It is a high-performance RTOS optimized for distributed, fault-tolerant systems requiring high performance and high availability. It has proved itself in numerous occasions, shortening development time, enhancing reliability and reducing life time maintenance costs.

Enea OSE features a kernel design that blends the ease of the use of symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) with the performance and scalability of asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP). Enea Hypervisor implements multiple high performance computing environments on top of multicore processors that benefiting developers of next generation network equipment with lower development costs by enabling hardware consolidation, increased performance in the system with higher throughput and shorter development time.
