Help develop low carbon energy and marine power skills and expertise in Wales.

Energy & Utility Skills (EU Skills), the Sector Skills Council for gas, power, waste management and water, are working with Welsh Government to create a Low Carbon Energy and Marine Power Institute in Wales. EU Skills are giving established training providers the chance to get involved in this new initiative.

Welsh Government’s paper entitled ‘Energy Wales – A Low Carbon Transition’ highlights the need for a co-ordinated and forward-thinking approach. EU Skills is addressing this challenge head on by establishing a new Welsh institute of training providers dedicated to developing Wales as a global centre of excellence for energy skills.

Aled Davies, Wales Manager at EU Skills, explains: “This is a great opportunity for training providers to expand their market and training portfolio, attract more learners and help develop Wales as a low carbon and marine power centre of excellence. Delivering new sector-specific training courses and qualifications, designed specifically to meet the industry's needs, is an exciting prospect.”

EU Skills are holding two free events, each lasting an hour and a half, one in North Wales at the Optic Technium in Denbighshire on 14/5/13 and the other in South Wales at the St Mary’s Hotel & Golf Club in Bridgend on 15/5/13. These events will inform providers and other interested parties about the initiative and how they can get involved. A limited number of spaces still remain for the invitation only event so booking is essential.

Aled continues: “The project will establish an infrastructure of training providers for the development of skills in the installation, commissioning and operation of energy generation sites; and the distribution of energy to customers.

“The institute will be a gateway to approved providers, operating from multiple campuses across Wales. The institute’s providers will offer initial, refresher, progression and transitional training.”

Employer-led, our purpose is to ensure that our industries have the skills they need now and in the future.

The energy and utilities sector is fundamental to the success of the UK economy and is crucial to the way modern society functions. It is critical to facilitate an adequate supply of competent people to develop, maintain and enhance the sector.
