ECITB BIG BANG POSTERECITB BIG BANG POSTERECITB BIG BANG POSTERThe Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) is launching its brand new educational App at the UK’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people; The Big Bang Fair 2014.

The ECITB can be found at stand GG11, at the NEC Birmingham, from 13th – 16th March, showing young people that with the right experience and training there are exciting and rewarding career opportunities available in engineering construction. Young visitors will be able to compete for top scores using the new ‘Be Part Of Engineering Construction’ App whilst also exploring the industry and its exciting sectors.

“We are delighted to be launching this fantastic new educational App. We wanted to create a tool to inform young people about the industry in an educational but fun way. We piloted the game at last year’s event and it had a great response, so it is really exciting to be officially launching it as part of the ECITB’s careers engagement activities,” said Miranda Gibbs, ECITB Head of Marketing, Communications & Careers.

The App is free to download from iTunes and comprises four mini games each representing a key sector of the engineering construction industry. It is an educational and challenging app suitable for all ages, users can have a go at; oil & gas ‘pipefitting’, nuclear ‘decommissioning,’ renewable energy ‘powering the grid’ and engineering construction ‘steel infrastructure.’

The engineering construction industry is one of the fastest growing industries and is at the heart of the UK’s energy revolution. There are boundless career opportunities in this prospering industry which includes exciting processing and power generating sectors, such as Nuclear, Renewables, Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals, Oil & Gas and many more that facilitate modern living.

Miranda continued: “A career in engineering construction is not what young people typically imagine. It requires highly skilled individuals to design, project manage, install, test, operate and maintain large scale infrastructures used to power the UK. It is important that we address misconceptions to attract more young people to replace the ageing workforce and compete on an international scale.”

The ECITB has statutory responsibility for the training of the UK’s engineering workforce and development of qualifications. It invests £10m annually to support 2200 apprentices in the UK to develop those valuable skills needed to drive the economy. Over the next four years the organisation will invest at least £100m into the delivery of apprenticeships, training programmes and the development of qualifications for the industry.
