ECITB Welcomes Nuclear Supply Chain Action

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) today welcomed the announcement by the Government, of a Supply Chain Action Plan for the nuclear industry. The plan contains actions designed to show how the Government and industry can work together to ensure the UK maximizes the economic growth opportunities, presented by around £60bn of new investment in the nuclear sector. It particularly addresses the need to improve readiness for the new build nuclear programme from related industries.

The nuclear new build programme presents the engineering construction industry with a major opportunity for growth. There are eight new sites planned for the UK and it signals the start of one of the largest construction programmes in history. Each nuclear new power station will require a development larger than the size of the Olympic Park and each one has the potential to employ 20,000 people.

For David Edwards, Chief Executive of the ECITB, the challenge is clear: ”It is our job to ensure there are sufficient skilled engineering construction workers to fill all the roles to design and build new nuclear power stations. We need a robust programme to make sure that the skills needed are developed in the right numbers and at the right time.”

The ECITB is the statutory organisation and the awarding body that has overall responsibility for the development of the qualifications and the training of the UK’s engineering construction workforce. Managing a national skills and development training fund, the ECITB invests over £20 million each year in providing: advice; qualifications; apprenticeships; training programmes; information; research; and the support engineering construction employers need to attract, develop and qualify the right people, for a sustainable and competitive workforce.

“The ECITB has a simple remit but one which is vital to the UK’s engineering capability. It is to ensure there are sufficient skilled people available within the engineering construction industry for it to succeed,” explained ECITB’s Chief Executive. “We will ensure that the quality and quantity of training available to our members, will put them in the very best position to deliver the nuclear new build programme in the UK.”

About the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board

  1. The ECITB is the statutory and charitable body set up to secure engineering construction skills now and for the future. It has delivered training successfully to over one million learners over 20 years, and is led and funded by employers from the industry, ensuring the services are relevant and fit for purpose
  2. The ECITB provides professional advice, information, skills development and qualifications to help individuals in engineering construction and anyone interested in a career in the industry to succeed. A dedicated website has been set up to provide more detailed information http://careers.ecitb.org.uk/
  3. The ECITB sets a range of occupational and training standards, awards industry specific qualifications and invests £20 million each year in support of apprentices and adult learners across a range of skills. From entry level craft and technician programmes through to advanced engineering project management skills. In 2011, 65,000 people were supported through the ECITB’s range of approved programmes delivered by a network of over 200 approved providers.
  4. The ECITB strategy is built on three objectives, these are to attract, qualify and develop talented people for the industry. The ECITB operating processes that secure the depth, breadth and quality of service are: employer engagement, identification of skills needs and priorities, stakeholder and provider engagement, delivery and continuous improvement. The ECITB provides support to employers, their employees and apprentices to design, build, maintain and decommission nuclear, power, pharmaceutical, renewables, chemicals, food, water, oil & gas facilities and other processes.
