A Right Royal Summer at Clifford's Tower

Every weekend from 21 July to 2 September 2012

It is only a matter of days since York was celebrating 800 years since the city was granted its independence – marked by a visit to Clifford’s Tower by King John himself – but every weekend during the summer holidays, it is the young visitors who will set the rules as they sit in the King’s throne for Time Travellers Go… Royal!

Each weekend, English Heritage’s Time Travelling Crew will pull out a collection of clothing that could have come directly from a young medieval king or queen’s wardrobe! From fur lined cloaks with sumptuous sashes to elaborate dresses for would-be queens and princesses, the regal dressing-up outfits make for wonderful photo opportunities!

“Clifford’s Tower is set to be the Milan or Paris of the medieval catwalk – these outfits look absolutely fantastic, and we’ve even got a selection of hats, wimples and crowns to complete the look,” explains property manager, Louise Wyatt. “We always encourage visitors to bring their cameras along anyway, as the wall walk offers the best uninterrupted views over the city and beyond, but turning your youngster into a medieval monarch makes it even more worthwhile!”

The Time Travellers will be set up in the courtyard of Clifford’s Tower every weekend throughout the summer holidays, although if the weather is inclement, the throne will relocate to the Chapel, which sits up the spiral staircase above the entrance to the Tower.

Visitors to Clifford’s Tower over the summer can also once again take advantage of a series of free podcasts, recorded by historian Julian Humphrys which give his unique view of the York skyline, as seen from the wall walk. The podcasts can be downloaded to a portable MP3 player at home, or onto a smartphone on the go from www.bestviewsofyork.co.uk

Clifford’s Tower is open daily throughout the summer from 10.00am to 6.00pm. Admission prices are £4.00 for adults, £3.60 for concessions and just £2.40 for children. A family ticket is available for £10.40, admitting two adults and up to three children. English Heritage members get in free.
