Britain's most romantic ruin opens for Valentine's Day
Would-be husbands looking for the perfect venue to pop the question will be able to make their proposal at Britain’s most romantic ruin, Whitby Abbey, this February as the site opens for nine days of half-term fun!
Daily opening resumes for the half term break (11-19 February) at the gothic cliff-top ruin, which has provided inspiration from generations of writers, painters and photographers from Bram Stoker to Frank Meadow Sutcliff for centuries.
“This is one of English Heritage’s top sites for marriage – and civil partnership – proposals, so it is great news that we’re going to open for Valentine’s Day,” comments site manager, Kath Trumper. “We often see newly-engaged couples grinning from ear to ear as they leave the site, but Valentine’s Day is always the most popular date – we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll have quite a few proposals this year!”
Whitby Abbey received the ‘Most Romantic Ruin’ accolade last January, when readers of BBC Countryfile magazine voted for the site, and TV presenter John Craven commented: “It’s a well-deserved winner. The view from the top is breath-taking; the setting couldn’t be more romantic.”
Whitby Abbey is open daily from 11 – 19 February from 10.00am to 4.00pm, and then every weekend until summer opening resumes at Easter. Admission prices are £6.00 for adults, £5.40 for concessions and £3.60 for children, or £15.60 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children).
