With the best uninterrupted views over York, Clifford’s Tower has long been a great vantage point for looking out over the city, and on Monday 9 July will offer the best possible views of the Ebor Vox event, as a choir processes from the Tower into the Eye of York for an evening celebration of York’s independence.

Parts of the Ebor Vox choir – a community choir formed especially for the York 800 celebrations - will muster in the tower prior to their performance, alongside the Shepherd Brass Band, dancers and puppeteers, in the Eye of York outside the Castle Museum, and to mark the occasion, Clifford’s Tower will be extending its opening hours so that visitors can share in the preparations.

“The Ebor Vox event will be one of the real highlights of York 800, when singers and marching bands parade from York Minster to the Eye of York before members of the nine participating choirs sing songs from the last 800 years,” says Clifford’s Tower’s site manager, Louise Wyatt. “To mark the special occasion, we are keeping Clifford’s Tower open for visits right up until 9.00pm that evening – a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the city’s independence from the lookout point established nearly 150 years before King John’s decree!”

The parade meets at York Minster at 6.00pm, arriving at Clifford’s Tower and the Eye of York at around 6.20pm. Normal admission prices apply to anyone visiting Clifford’s Tower (£4.00 for adults, £3.60 for concessions and £2.40 for children, or £10.40 for a family ticket for two adults and up to three children).

The Ebor Vox event will follow a weekend when visitors can meet the King who granted York its independence, as Clifford’s Tower hosts King John on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July from 11am to 5.00pm.
