The future of the Vikings is at threat and Clifford’s Tower in York is hoping that its young visitors can help keep Norse legends alive this February half term (11-19 February) with a Viking trail, as part of the world-famous Viking Festival.

“Clifford’s Tower enjoys a lofty position looking over the city, which makes it perfect for the gods to watch over the Festival, but unfortunately, they have gone missing, and we need help to find them before the grand combat events,” comments Clifford’s Tower’s manager, Claire Hogan. “We know that they are within the walls, but are hoping that our younger visitors can track them down – they’ll receive a reward for their efforts!”

The trail runs daily from Saturday 11 to Sunday 19 February, with Clifford’s Tower open throughout half term week from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Admission prices are £3.90 for adults, £3.50 for concessions and £2.30 for children, or £10.10 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children). English Heritage members get in free.

February is also one of the best times to enjoy the views uninterrupted views from Clifford’s Tower – which makes it especially popular with photographers. “The crisp, clear air, combined with no leaves on trees getting in the way means that you get the best views over York’s skyline. There’s no glass or wire mesh between you and the best views of York, which is why Clifford’s Tower is so popular with photographers, who can take their time capturing that perfect rooftop panorama, from the towers of Ferrybridge to those of York Racecourse, to the beauty of York’s two rivers weaving their way through the town,” adds Claire. Free podcasts are still available for smartphone download from www.bestviewsofyork.co.uk in which historian, Julian Humphrys, describes his favourite views over the city.
