Time Travellers Go... Heroes & Villains, 23 August 2012

Learn, stand and deliver! That’s what visitors to Stokesay Castle, near Ludlow, will do on 23 August, when the site hosts a Highwayman School as part of its Time Travelling summer!

The Highwayman School is part of its Heroes and Villains event, running on Thursday 23 August. A duo of historic re-enactors will teach young visitors some of the tricks of the trade of 17thcentury bandits of the road, which enabled them to get money, jewels and ransoms off their wealthy victims! The event will demonstrate the skills of both the law breakers and makers, with musket drill and smuggler’s tales from Stokesay Castle’s Time Travellers!

The Heroes & Villains event follows hot on the heels of Stokesay Castle’s Myths and Legends – taking place on Thursday 16 August. Inspired by some legendary characters from British mythology, including St George and King Arthur, young visitors can learn dragon-battling skills with junior jousting for young knights, and pretend to sit at the Round Table for tales of the gallant knights of yore!

“Our costumed Time Travellers are fantastically skilled at making stories of the past come alive, and when they are working with such intriguing characters as highwaymen and smugglers, and even more so with our legendary knights, it sets the imagination racing and really engages children with different aspects of this country’s colourful history,” comments English Heritage’s events manager, Charlie Evans. “With swords, shields and even knights’ tabards available on site, our young visitors can dress the part to fully embrace the medieval lifestyle!”

The Time Travellers Go... events run each Thursday from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the castle itself open from 10.00am. Admission prices are £6.00 for adults, £5.40 for concessions, £3.60 and £15.60 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children). English Heritage members get in free. There is an additional £1 charge per child to help fund the Time Travellers activity.
