13 – 17 and 20 – 24 August

First it was rogues and villains, then torturers and executioners – now, visitors to Kenilworth Castle from Monday 13 to Friday 17 August are set to find out about a rather more peaceful and law-abiding life as the English Heritage Time Travellers Go... Medieval!

Continuing the medieval summer at Kenilworth Castle, medieval re-enactors will provide mid-week fun within the castle’s walls – including knocking down a replica castle’s wall during a siege - in a week of 15th century frivolity, looking at the games that would have been played by people of all classes, and examining some important technological developments in time keeping in fun presentations by historic interpretation duo, Heuristics.

The following week, visitors can enjoy an instant lift to their social status, as the Time Travellers Go... Knights and Princesses! Learning how to respond if you are introduced to a member of the household, or trying on armour in a bid to be Knighted by the King himself. It all promises five days of hands-on fun with replica weaponry, and even toy swords to be used in junior squire training sessions.

“We hope that our more gruesome Time Traveller activities in the first two weeks of August will have put young visitors off a medieval life of crime, so now it is time for fun as they enjoy their freedom with traditional medieval games,” comments Kenilworth Castle’s property manager, Holly Woodward. “Alternatively, if you are more interested in defending the castle, our Knight school as part of Knights and Princesses week could be just the ticket!”

Time Travellers Go... events run on weekdays until Friday 24 August. The activities run from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the Castle and Elizabethan Garden opening one hour earlier at 10.00am.

Weekend visitors will not miss out on the medieval merriment, either, with a fun family Kings & Queens Trail around the grounds running on 11 & 12 and 18 & 19 August. Participants have to find a series of medieval model monarchs hiding around the grounds, and will receive a certificate of excellence when they find them all!

Admission prices are £8.20 for adults, £7.40 for concessions, £4.90 for children or £21.30 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children). English Heritage members get in free. There is an additional £1 charge per child (member and non-member) to help fund the Time Travellers event.

Kenilworth Castle’s Medieval Summer draws to a close over the August Bank Holiday weekend with the grand final of The Knights Tournament, a competition which has taken place in heats around the country over the last couple of months, and which will see English Heritage’s grand champion crowned on Bank Holiday Monday 27 August, at the end of two days of crucial combat!
