Two-for-one deals are more often seen in supermarkets, but a joint initiative between English Heritage and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall will see pupils offered a two-site school trip that promises to immerse students in the world of the Tudors.

Each Wednesday and Thursday for three weeks in October, students are invited to Pendennis Castle in Falmouth to experience the Tudor Time Capsules workshop and explore the keep, and then head over to the nearby Maritime Museum for a Tudor Explorers workshop in a two-site school trip. The co-ordinated visits cover complementary aspects of Tudor life, from everyday life in a castle to the great seafaring explorers of the era.

“Our Tudor World special events are the ultimate school trip for Key Stage Two pupils, taking a fascinating look at Tudor life using the resources of top historical experts, who present the story of 16thcentury life in a wonderfully engaging manner – the galleries of the National Maritime Museum combined with the heritage of Pendennis Castle make for an education visit that the pupils will never forget,” comments education manager for English Heritage, Harriet Attwood.

The initiative has been carefully planned by staff, volunteers and the education teams from both sites, with the content carefully co-ordinated to reinforce learning and provide a fascinating insight into life in Tudor England. The day is split into four sessions each lasting 45 minutes. Each school spends either a morning or an afternoon at each site, incorporating exploration, workshops and discovery sessions around the castle and the museum.

“For the past four years the Maritime Museum has been delighted to be involved in this special partnership, working together and sharing resources to offer something of unique value for Cornish schools.  I am particularly proud of the dedicated team of trained volunteers, not just delivering some of the activities but also leading the groups around and between both sites.  Without them we would not be able to deliver such an amazingly ambitious, rich and challenging programme which now attracts schools from Penzance to Wadebridge,” comments Stuart Slade, education manager for the National Maritime Museum.

“Where else could Cornish school children experience life in a real Tudor castle, and then place this local Cornish history in the wider context of Tudor explorers? These brave explorers challenged the might of the Spanish Empire and in doing so changed our understanding of the whole world.”

The dates of this year’s workshops have been extended due to popular demand, so that more schools will be able to take part. Participation in the Tudor World days is £5.00 per pupil, with accompanying adults free. Sessions should be prebooked via the English Heritage Education Bookings team on 0870 333 0606 or by emailing bookeducation@english-heritage.org.uk
