Winter opening for educational visits with English Heritage

English Heritage’s education team has today announced the exclusive opening times for educational visits to its top sites during the winter months.

Stonehenge and nearby Old Sarum will remain open daily throughout the winter months, with many other sites opening exclusively for free prebooked education visits in November 2012 and March 2013.

“Many of our sites are only open to visitors at weekends during the winter months, but we’ve arranged for 20 of our top sites for free educational visits to open on Mondays and Fridays in November and March, which effectively means that school groups can have exclusive access to places like Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire, Whitby Abbey and Dover Castle without any other visitors on site,” comments English Heritage’s education marketing manager, Charlotte Wiberg. “We’ve also got a couple of sites – Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight and Conisbrough Castle in South Yorkshire – who can often accommodate groups on request even when the sites are normally closed.”

The full list of sites opening in November and March is:

South East

  • Apsley House - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Battle Abbey - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Carisbrooke Castle is available to pre booked schools only through the Carisbrooke Castle Museum Trust Education Team.
  • Dover Castle - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Down House - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Eltham Palace - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Lullingstone Roman Villa - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Portchester - Mondays & Fridays only

South West

  • Old Sarum – Open all year, except 24th-26th December and 1st January 2013
  • Pendennis Castle – Mondays & Fridays only
  • Stonehenge – Open all year, except 24th & 25th December
  • Tintagel Castle - Mondays & Fridays only

East of England

  • Framlingham Castle - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Orford Castle - - Mondays & Fridays only

Midlands

  • Beeston Castle, Cheshire - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Wroxeter Roman City, Shropshire - Mondays & Fridays only
  • Peveril Castle, Derbyshire - Mondays & Fridays only

The North

  • Carlisle Castle, Cumbria - Mondays & Tuesday only
  • Clifford's Tower, York - Mondays & Fridays only
