Latest smart home solutions based on energy harvesting wireless technology combine control of energy consumption, security systems, comfort functions and multimedia

San Ramon, 12 September 2012 – EnOcean Alliance and members will present new smart home solutions integrating energy harvesting wireless technology at Smart Homes 2012 (RAI Convention Centre, Amsterdam, 9-11 October), the platform for Europe’s smart home professionals. In Hall 4, booth K22 visitors can experience intelligent smart home communication working wirelessly and without batteries, just by using energy from their surroundings. The solutions all utilise EnOcean’s energy harvesting wireless technology based on the international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3-10.  Alongside EnOcean, Air-TraXX, permundo, myGEKKO and TELEFUNKEN Smart Buildings will be showing their latest developments. In addition, Future Energy Solutions (booth F09) will be showing EnOcean-based products at the show.

In the smart home market, ease of use, plug&play capability and attractive design are essential. As individual needs and technologies change, users should be able to expand the system at any time. Interoperable devices play a key role in this regard to ensure that users have freedom of choice when it comes to products and benefit from flexible connection between devices.

Products based on EnOcean energy harvesting wireless technology meet all these criteria. The wireless modules harvest the energy they need to transmit a control command from their surroundings – motion, light or temperature differences. EnOcean Alliance is a consortium of companies that use this technology in their products. The introduction of the international EnOcean wireless standard ISO/IEC 14543-3-10 means that all devices can communicate with each other. For example, they can work together as part of a complex smart home system making the batteryless and wireless technology the ideal connection to bridge the last few metres between sensors in the home or an existing WLAN or mobile communication network.

At Smart Homes 2012, the following EnOcean Alliance partners are presenting:

EnOcean, the originator of energy harvesting wireless technology, will highlight the significance of the ISO/IEC standard - the first and only wireless standard optimised for energy harvesting solutions – and the new opportunities it is creating for self-powered wireless operations in smart homes, as well as for related fields of application such as smart grids. Furthermore, the company will provide a future outlook showing how energy harvesting wireless sensors could make the “Internet of Things” a reality.

Panel Session: At Smart Homes 2012, Armin Anders, Vice President Business Development and Co-Founder of EnOcean, will participate in the discussion “What value do standards bring across the value chain and what more can they do to advance the Smart Home agenda”; Wednesday, 10 October, at 5 pm in the RAI Conference Centre.

TELEFUNKEN Smart Building will present 14 new components for Joonior, its complete smart home solution based on EnOcean technology. New actuators for shading, dimming and switching as well as a power supply and an antenna module offer numerous intelligent fields of application for home automation. TELEFUNKEN Smart Building will also introduce its new software release “Sangay”. It supports all new flush-mounted and serial mounted components, and provides various new features for the central control unit, Joonior Suite and Joonior App. These additional functionalities include an enhanced display, brightness control and information on data and storage load or the SD-card’s capacity. In addition, the popular Joonior App for mobile access to the Joonior Smart Building System is now also available for Android.

myGEKKO is an innovative building control system that centralises all functions, offering maximum comfort and the possibility to optimise energy consumption. Moreover, myGEKKO enables central and individual control of all activities in a house via a central, simple and intuitive user interface. The occupants can customise and modify their settings whenever they want in order to fit their needs. This includes the management of lights, doors, heating, alarms, air-conditioning or shutters, as well as monitoring of energy consumption and costs. All activities can be controlled remotely from any location, for example from the office or even from a holiday resort.

permundo, a supplier of advanced Smart Control Components, enables direct control and monitoring of electrical appliances in a home or office environment. The permundo Smart Mini Plugs are sufficiently small to be mounted in standard electrical wall mounts. They detect which type of electrical load is connected to them and choose the optimal control mode. They act as a universal dimmer for incandescent lamps, dimmable CFLs and LEDs and as a switch when a vacuum cleaner, coffee machine, printer or any other non-dimmable appliance is plugged in. The control modules can function as a stand-alone or can be combined in an intelligent wireless (EnOcean) network.

Air-TraXX B.V. is a system integrator and supplier of air distribution products in the Netherlands and Mainland China. The company’s portfolio is used in a wide range of projects such as office buildings, schools or domestic buildings. Air-TraXX is specialised in HVAC products and solutions like VAV-, fancoil- and air-handling units including controls. Air-TraXX B.V. is a distributor of CAN2GO, a provider of all-in-one building management systems with full EnOcean and BACnet compliance. The solution seamlessly combines control, internet server and routing functionalities into one device. The CAN2GO automation servers implement the integration of different sub-systems into a complete system using EnOcean wireless technology, for example.
