Intern turned CEO
It’s surely every intern’s dream – less than a year after Richard Vasconcelos embarked on an internship with Epic, the UK’s leading e-learning company, he landed the job of CEO for their newly-opened Brazilian operation.
Last summer, while completing his dissertation for a Masters degree in E-learning at Oxford University, Richard undertook a four-week internship at Epic in Brighton. During that time, he worked on a mobile learning project for Epic’s client, Collins Education, and wrote a paper on the state of the e-learning industry in his home country of Brazil. His report was so compelling that it convinced the Epic Board to establish an office in Rio de Janeiro.
“Brazil is one of the fastest growing emerging economies in the world, with a mature e-learning market, and a rapidly expanding mobile learning market too,” says Epic’s CEO, Jonathan Satchell. “Richard presented a real opportunity for us. EpicBrasil is the perfect combination of Epic’s 25 years’ learning expertise with Richard’s local knowledge and service capability.”
To top it all, Richard is carrying on the tradition of a family with a long history of successful education businesses. His grandfather founded Estacio, Brazil’s largest private university, and his father and brother own the Britannia English Language Schools.
Epic is proud of its talent program, which seeks not only to attract the best interns, but also to give them a great experience in a growing and exciting creative industry. Director of Learning, Dr Naomi Norman says, “We recognise that our relationship with interns is very much win-win. We expect a lot of them, but are willing to give a lot in return – Richard is a great example of that.”
