Episurf Medical updates on AI-based production process

Episurf Medical (NASDAQ: EPIS B) announces an update of the company’s medical imaging capability for 3D visualisation of joints.

Episurf Medical has a software, based on artificial intelligence (AI), that generates 3D models (segmentations) of joint structures. The software has been developed during the last years to be applied for different parts of Episurf Medical’s production processes. The company is now finalising training of AI-based MR segmentation to be used for designing the company’s Episealer® Knee implants. During the spring this segmentation software will be introduced as part of the Episealer® Knee technology in the European market, and thereby be used in Episurf’s production process.

“What is exceptional for us is that we can do this based on magnetic resonance imaging. To do this based on CT images is much easier. With MRI you can identify soft tissue, and we can therefore get 3D models of the joints where bone and cartilage are automatically distinguished. Previously we have used an external segmentation service for the Episealer® Knee implants, but now we are moving this inhouse. AI performs segmentation automatically in only a few minutes, and this is greatly improving the effectiveness in our production process. All in all, previously, this process took several days. I am very impressed by the power of the AI-based software, and it is highly exciting to use AI in our day-to-day work.” says Pål Ryfors, CEO Episurf Medical.
