Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today announces the integration of Ericsson Cloud Manager with Ericsson SDN Controller to orchestrate service and cloud infrastructure management, and to provide Network Function Virtualization (NFV) management and SDN control in a single solution. The solution is in trials with South Korean wireless operator LG Uplus as part of its 5G and Internet of Things network evolution strategy.

"Our Core Network 5G evolution strategy relies on carrier-grade, multi-domain SDN functions and end-to-end orchestration that conform to the dynamic and transient nature of 5G mobile services," said Mr. Changkil Jo, VP, Head of Network Development Center, LG Uplus. "Ericsson's integrated SDN and real-time, policy-based cloud management solution makes mobile cloud management easy. Its unique features will enable us to provide high quality, flexible, cost-effective mobile services to our customers."

The integration provides operators a cost-effective transition to virtualization by enabling management of hybrid environments from a single control point. End-to-end virtual and physical resources are automatically orchestrated across business, service and network layers, whether owned or accessed by third parties. Operators can access network services and virtual network functions in distributed clouds connected over SDN-enabled and other traditional networks, and orchestrate the provisioning, activation, optimization and decommissioning of cloud infrastructure resources and network connectivity from one system.  SDN controller is a commercial version of OpenDaylight SDN controller, a northbound API of Ericsson SDN controller product.

Ove Anebygd, VP and Head of Solution Area OSS/BSS, Business Unit Support Solutions, Ericsson, says: "Our customers' strategic plans include moving as quickly as feasible to dynamic virtual environments for fast time-to-market and reduced operating costs. The integration of Ericsson Cloud Manager and Ericsson SDN Controller opens the door for operators to add value to offerings by making them on-demand and amenable to feature-rich ecosystems from third-party providers. Our initial work with LG Uplus demonstrates the impact that integrated cloud capabilities can have in streamlining virtualization migrations."

Management and control are becoming ever increasingly vital in the Operator transformation towards 5G ready Core Networks ensuring the full benefits for NFV can be realized.

Operators must become agile as they support services across networks, offer a range of plans and push the limits of innovation. Ericsson helps customers meet changing demands with a comprehensive, unified OSS/BSS product suite that combines business, IT and network capabilities. Ericsson's market leadership is underscored by the company's breakthrough work with customers to improve the subscriber experience, capture new revenues and boost business efficiencies.
