Ericsson and Celcom fight fraud Ericsson will supply a fraud prevention solution to Malaysia's largest mobile network operator. This is a breakthrough on the market for operators of ETACS networks (Extended Total Access Communications System). Celcom is the first ETACS operator to deploy this solution to prevent 'cloning' in its network. In the deal, initially valued at more than USD 10 million (SEK 80 million), Ericsson will supply a proven 'fingerprinting' fraud prevention solution in a turnkey project, including operation and maintenance. Ericsson will handle system operation for at least a year, as well as running all support. Celcom is the biggest mobile network operator, out of eight in Malaysia, holding some 55% of the mobile market. Included in the solution to Celcom is PhonePrint® developed by US-based Corsair. It's based on a technology called Radio Frequency Fingerprinting, used to discriminate legitimate and fraudulent signals; making it possible to tackle 'cloning', i.e. the use of counterfeit phones to avoid call charges. "As one component in Ericsson's fraud prevention strategy, PhonePrint makes it essentially impossible for fraudsters to carry on with their cellular cloning enterprises, as the phones they produce cannot even be used," says Gunnar Svahn at Ericsson. Ericsson's Fraud Solutions provide complete solutions consisting of consultancy services, e.g. assessment of an operator's fraud problems, as well as implementation of fraud detection and prevention systems. These solutions are a part of Ericsson's Telecom Management Solutions (TMS) delivering business solutions and consultancy services to network operators. TMS provides expertise in both the commercial and technical aspects of todays more and more complex network operations.
