Ericsson and Nokia make the first GSM 400 call The first official mobile call on the GSM 400 frequency band was made during a GSM 400 conference in Budapest, Hungary. The call was performed with Ericsson prototype infrastructure, such as Radio Base Station and Base Station Controller and dual band GSM 400/1800 prototype mobile phones from Nokia. This first GSM 400 call is an important milestone in the progress of extending GSM with the new frequency band at 400 MHz. GSM 400 delivers the same high- quality services as the present frequency bands. GSM is currently available in the 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz frequencies. Extending GSM with a fourth frequency band will be a cost-efficient way to provide improved coverage and will offer better possibilities to benefit from combined low and high frequencies. GSM 400 also provides NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephony) system operators a logical way to introduce quality digital services and seamless international roaming possibilities. Ericsson and Nokia jointly announced their support for GSM 400 in April 1999. The standard was previously called GSM 450.
