  • Evolution of Tri-Band Carrier Aggregation, ideal for indoor and outdoor small cells, with LTE Category 11, designed to support up to 600 Mbps downlink data rates
  • Qualcomm® Snapdragon(TM) next-generation LTE modem powers mobile device on Ericsson LTE-Advanced network for Telstra
  • Live demonstration at Mobile World Congress 2015 at both Ericsson and Qualcomm booths

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today announced the live demonstration of LTE-A Carrier Aggregation supporting peak data speeds of up to 600 Mbps, in cooperation with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM). This latest technology milestone utilizes 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), making it an ideal solution to boost app coverage in indoor and outdoor small cell networks.

Telstra, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies have cooperated on a number of key industry milestones, focused on delivering better app coverage to smartphone users, most recently achieving 450 Mbps on a commercial end-to-end LTE solution.  The latest technical trial undertaken in Ericsson labs and observed by Telstra, was achieved using a next-generation Qualcomm® Snapdragon(TM) LTE modem from QTI, which powers smartphones on an Ericsson LTE-Advanced network.

Mike Wright, Telstra Group Managing Director, Networks, says: "Telstra is committed to supporting innovation that drives a consistently better experience for our customers and superior performance throughout our network. This new demonstration by Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies' provides assurances that the next step in network development is on track and enables us to effectively plan for the future."

Serge Willenegger, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, says: "We are excited to be contributing to another significant milestone in delivering fast and reliable cellular data and connectivity solutions. As wireless data demand continues to grow, we are committed to work with industry leaders like Telstra and Ericsson to further augment the unique mobile broadband experience on LTE networks."

LTE-A Carrier Aggregation enables operators to use spectrum more efficiently to deliver a better user experience to customers throughout the network.  The use of 256 QAM enables higher peak rates to be achieved within a reduced cell radius, making it an ideal solution for indoor and outdoor small cell architectures.

Thomas Norén, Vice President and Head of Radio Product Management, Ericsson says: "Demand for digital experiences is resulting in an ever-increasing need for improved app coverage, both indoors and outside.  The innovations that Ericsson is driving in both small cells and LTE-A Carrier Aggregation with leading customers like Telstra, and eco-system partners like Qualcomm Technologies, will ensure that consumer demand for mobile broadband continues to be fulfilled."
