Ericsson has been selected by TeliaSonera to trial Ericsson's solution for IMS, IP Multimedia Subsystem. The trial will allow TeliaSonera to prepare its offer of converged multimedia services, brought on a cost-effective common platform for mobile and fixed networks.
The trial will start during the spring and will include TeliaSonera's operations in the entire Nordic region, which will allow Ericsson's IMS solution to demonstrate full interoperability in a multi-vendor environment. Ericsson's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) gives operators an immediate revenue opportunity on the road toward all-IP, through a wide range of new or enriched services, including telecom-grade voice over IP (VoIP), Push to talk over Cellular (PoC), and other enriched communication such as combinations of voice, text, pictures and video.

IMS defines a horizontal architecture, where service enablers and common functions can be reused for multiple fixed and mobile applications.  Ericsson's IMS is a key enabler for fixed-mobile convergence, and provides a secure migration path to a cost-effective, all-IP network that will meet end-user demands for new enriched services.

"It is important for us to offer a standards based service that will ensure a wide selection of innovative and interoperable handsets," said Claes Nycander, Senior Vice President and Chief Network Officer, TeliaSonera. "It was natural for us to invite Ericsson, since it's a technological driving force and a strong supplier to TeliaSonera."

"Ericsson has vast knowledge from years of work in the IMS area, both from a standardization and development point of view," said Björn Olsson, Executive Vice President, Business Unit Systems, Ericsson. "As one of its major suppliers, we feel proud to offer TeliaSonera our expertise and capability to integrate and optimize its networks through this solution."

Ericsson has signed 25 IMS contracts for commercial launch or trial, all based on the 3GPP standard. The contracts are distributed over the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa, and include GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA, CDMA2000, fixed implementations and includes a mix of applications such as IP Telephony, IP Centrex, Push to talk over Cellular and Combinational Services (weShare).

Ericsson is one of three vendors selected by TeliaSonera to trial IMS.
